Setting Rivets and Snaps

Rivets and snaps are the fasteners that let leatherwork skip stitching where speed or function demands it, and they are also where many otherwise clean projects go wrong. A tilted rivet cap or a snap that spins in its hole is instantly visible, and unlike a stitching wobble, hardware mistakes are hard to remove without leaving scars. The good news is that clean hardware setting is almost entirely about two boring variables: hole size and post length.
Start with post length, because it is the one nobody checks. A rivet or snap post should protrude about 3 mm beyond the leather stack it passes through, roughly the thickness of the cap it must fill. Too short and the pieces never seat, popping apart under load. Too long and the excess post buckles sideways as you strike, producing the classic tilted, mushroomed cap. Stack your actual leather layers, measure them, and buy hardware in a couple of post lengths, because one length never fits every project.
Hole size is the second variable. The post should slide in snugly, not swim. A hole even one size too large lets the snap rotate and eventually tear loose, while a hole too small forces the leather to bunch around the post. Punch test holes in scrap of the same thickness until the fit is right, and note the punch size for that hardware in whatever passes for your workshop notebook. Rotary punches handle thin work; drive punches on a poly board give cleaner holes in thick stacks.
Setting technique is simple once the sizes are right. Work on a solid surface with a small anvil or setting block, use the concave setter that matches the cap so the dome is not flattened, and strike with firm, moderate mallet blows rather than one huge hit. For double-cap rivets, the concave anvil recess protects the bottom cap. For line 20 and line 24 snaps, each of the four components has its correct orientation, and it is worth doing one complete practice snap on scrap before touching the project, every time, because snap parts are cheap and project panels are not.
Placement deserves as much thought as setting. Hardware concentrates stress, so keep rivets at least one full cap-width away from edges, and reinforce high-load points like strap ends with two rivets or a rivet plus stitching. On straps that flex, position snaps so the flexing happens beside the hardware, not through it. And consider serviceability: Chicago screws instead of rivets at buckle folds allow hardware swaps later, which turns a repair into a two-minute job.
When a set goes wrong, drill it out rather than prying. A drill bit slightly larger than the post spins the cap free in seconds with minimal collateral damage, and the hole can often be reused with the next size of hardware. Keep spare hardware on hand, expect to sacrifice a few pieces to the learning curve, and remember the sequence that prevents nearly every failure: measure the stack, match the post, punch snug, set square.
